DENTISTRY

Does your pet have bad breath? Did you know that more than 85 percent of dogs and cats over four years old have some form of periodontal disease? Senior dogs and cats over 7 years of age are especially susceptible to periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a painful inflammatory condition in which bacteria attack the gums, ligaments and bone tissues that surround and support the teeth. If left unchecked, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and travel to major organs, starting infections there and seriously compromising the health of your pet.

Why not avail of a free dental consult for your pet with one of our veterinary nurses. They will advise you on the condition of your pet’s teeth, good dental hygiene and whether they will need dental treatment under anaesthetic.

At Advanced Pet Care, we carry out full dental procedures including cleaning, polishing and extractions of infected or broken teeth. Dental care in animals requires that they undergo a general anaesthetic to ensure that we have complete access to sometimes very tiny jaws and that your pet will be pain free during the procedure as well as preventing harmful bacteria enter your pet’s airway.

A comprehensive physical examination will be carried out by a veterinary surgeon prior to any anaesthetic and we would also advise a pre-operative blood test to check that all organs are functioning properly, particularly if your pet is over seven years of age.

Many clients are worried about anaesthetising an older pet, and whilst every anaesthetic involves some risk, age in itself should not preclude the administration of anaesthesia. All our nurses are qualified and registered and will monitor your pet throughout, patients can also be placed on intravenous fluids to maintain their blood pressure and kidney perfusion (flow rates) and we can tailor anaesthesia to the health status of your pet.

Please call 0469240434 (Kells) or 0469023854 (Navan) to arrange a free consultation with one of our veterinary nurses.
